4 Effective Ways to Clean Wooden Cutting Boards

1. Soap

Soak a clean cloth in a mixture of diluted soap and hot water, then wipe the entire surface of the cutting board. Repeat several times until the board is completely free of dirt, then rinse with clean water.

2. Stain Remover

Mix 1 tablespoon of stain remover with 1.5 liters of water in a spray bottle and shake well to dissolve the stain remover in the water. Spray this mixture on the top surface of the cutting board and wait for about 10 minutes before rinsing the board with warm water. Use a clean cloth to wipe the surface of the cutting board. Be careful not to let the stain remover solution get on your clothes or kitchen towels. Repeat the steps for the back side of the cutting board and finish by using a clean cloth to dry the entire board.

3. Lime and Salt

Cut the lime in half and squeeze the lime juice evenly on the surface of the cutting board. Then, sprinkle salt on the areas with lime juice. You should choose coarse salt as it will help scrub the surface of the cutting board better. If you don’t have salt, you can use baking soda as a substitute.

Use the cut lime to scrub the surface of the cutting board in a circular motion to dissolve the lime and salt mixture and clean the board. Then, rinse the board under running water to remove all the lime juice and salt. Wipe the cutting board with a dishcloth and use a paper towel to absorb all the remaining water on the board.

Repeat the cleaning steps above for the back side of the cutting board.

4. Vinegar

Pour pure vinegar on both sides of the cutting board and use a paper towel to dry it. Vinegar is a powerful cleaning agent that can remove odors, disinfect, and clean the cutting board.

5. Some small notes

– Using stain remover to clean the cutting board can make the wooden surface dry. You can remedy this by applying beeswax evenly on the surface of the cutting board to reduce the dryness caused by the stain remover.

– After cutting meat or fish on the wooden cutting board, clean the board immediately and use a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to spray on the board to disinfect and remove harmful bacteria commonly found in raw meat. After spraying hydrogen peroxide, rinse the board with clean water and use a paper towel to dry.

– Do not soak the wooden cutting board in water as it will absorb water and crack.

– Always dry the cutting board after cleaning it thoroughly.
